What-What?! Week of June 28th

This post is late because I was sleeping.  I have no regrets.

It has been legitimately hot here.  In fact, I think that this is the first time since we've moved that it has been this hot; mid- to high-80s.  By Thursday, it's suppose to be up to the 90s.  Happily, it cools down pretty quickly at night, but we have an old house; leaky windows, and no A/C make it uncomfortable during the day.  At least it's not 100 degrees or whatever like in California.

Yesterday, I took the big kids to Lowe's for the Build and Grow thing.  The project was Captain America's motorcycle, and the second part of a six-part Avengers set.  This was probably one of the poorest designed projects we've done a these events; there were various parts that came glued together, and in the course of hammering everything else together, they tended to fall apart.  Otherwise, the kids had fun.

The husband picked up a little kit to do with Ozzy, so they made a pirate ship together:
It has a retractable plank.

The husband also picked up a Viking hat from the thrift store:
He insisted on yelling "BLASTOFF!" the whole time I was taking pictures.
When we were playing with water yesterday, the kids started to fill it up and dump water on people.  Well, actually, no, that's what the husband and I were doing.  To Oz.  But he paid us back for it; he surreptitiously filled the hat up with water left over in the hose, then snuck up to us grown-ups, and dumped it!  It mostly got me wet, but the husband's arm got a bunch too.  But we deserved it, so you know. :P

Found some pictures of the big kids too (just in case you thought Ozzy was my favorite :P ):

There were other things I was going to post, but I have forgotten them all.

Oh!  Lego has announced another set of female scientists: LEGO Reveals Female Scientist Minifigures.  I'm pretty excited about the paleontologist, but then I would be, because dinosaurs are awesome.

"A Castle Bed"
Saffron knows that she'll eventually get her own bedroom, and has some grandiose ideas about what it will be like.

What-What?! Week of June 21st

Didn't post on Thursday, because I was broken.  I had a terrible day, and was just really discouraged.  It seemed like everything that is important to me on a day-to-day basis -- schooling the children, working the works, taking the classes, keeping my family healthy -- went wrong.  And I haven't been getting enough sleep, to boot.  So it all just collided into an entire day of wondering where the hell I have gone wrong with my life.  If all the stuff that I have been doing is worth it.  Which is stupid.  Being able to pay the bills is worth it, learning things is worth it, having an educated, healthy family is worth it.

So Thursday, I did the stuff I needed to; schooled the children, worked the works, took the classes, cooked a healthy-ish meal.  Then I watched part of Hot Fuzz, and fell into bed.

Friday wasn't as bad.  Saturday was better.

The husband made a teepee out of bamboo, and an old sheet:
The proud creator with his work.
I fit in it too! :D
It hasn't blown away yet, so that's nice.

Book Review: His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik

This is one of Peter's books that I stole off his desk.  I made sure that he'd read it first, though, because I am a nice person like that.  It's a historical fantasy, set in Britain during the Napoleonic Wars.  There are dragons.  The story follows a naval captain, who winds up being the caretaker of a dragon.  I liked pretty well; It was well-written, with an interesting story, and a believable world setting.  The only part that bugged me was some of the pacing; it is a bit slow.  The ending was anticlimactic, and on the verge of being disappointing.  I hit the last page and truly thought "That's it?".  It just felt like there should have been more; a greater sense struggle, a longer description of the final battle and it's fallout, just something.  It's the first in a series though, so it's got that "...and now you'll buy the next one!" feeling a bit.  Otherwise, it is quite enjoyable.  I'm currently going through the Dragonlance trilogy, but when I'm done with them, I'll be reading the sequel to this.

What-What?! Week of June 14th

Where did this week go?  What did I even do? It felt very long, but was pretty unproductive.  I suppose that, since the house hasn't burned down, the kids have been fed and schooled, and work has been worked, we'll count it as a win. :P

Iron Man, hanging out with the baby wipes. :P
I did take the big kids to the Lowe's Build and Grow clinic yesterday, where they built themselves an Avengers jet.  This is the first time we've gone to the Marysville store to do this, and it was certainly different than the Everett one; at Everett, there are stacks of wood that are used as tables, while in Marysville, you sit on the floor.  This was a bit annoying at times, but it did seem like the kids spent less time trying to run a hammer into their faces, since the project was farther away from said faces.  The poor mom sitting next to us was really frustrated by the subpar instructions, but I did find this to be one of the easier projects.  The next one is in two weeks, and the project is going to be Captain America's motorcycle.  I might have to sign Ozzy up for that one, too, because he is just crazy for motorcycles.

Oh, I forgot to talk about what the husband made for my birthday dinner!  It was a tri-tip roast, barbequed Argentinian-style, with chimichurri sauce.  The chimichurri sauce was especially delicious, with earthy flavors and a good amount of heat.  It was extremely green.  We ate it on pretty much everything, it was that good.

This past Sunday, the husband and I cooked German food; he made pork schnitzel and cabbage salad, while I made spaetzle.  It was a great comfort food meal, perfect for a Sunday night.  And we cooked together, which is always fun. :)

Oh!  I know what we did!  We got a baby pool:
Fill 'er up!
And... relax!

"Oh no! Anna is starting to freeze!"
Saffron's watercolor skills have improved greatly.
Also, I'm posting this on a Thursday this time. :P

What-What?! Week of June 7th

Today is Sunday... and it's actually Sunday, unlike Thursday, when it was actually Wednesday.  I don't know how I lost track of days so badly last week, but I did. :P

Yesterday, the husband and I took the kids to a community event -- "Healthy Communities Challenge Day".  There were a bunch of local (generally -- Wells Fargo was there...?) health-related organizations and businesses, with games to play and things like that.  One of the local pediatric dentists was there, and I'll probably take the kids there soon; I hadn't taken them anywhere in Everett because I couldn't find anyone that had reviews I was satisfied with.  The local librarians were there with info on their summer reading program, so we picked up papers to do that.  It's a ten hour program, and I'm confident that Saffron will blow through it (that kid reads).  Ozzy got a new rubber ducky, Saffron got a Frisbee, and Corey got a piggy bank.  Also, new balloons and a mini beach ball.  Our house is loud.

There was also some firemen, with their truck:

Last Monday was my birthday, and I got books, mostly; the original Dragonlance Trilogy, The Warlock in Spite of Himself, and The Turnip Princess and Other Newly Discovered Fairy Tales.  The last one is probably the most interesting, but I haven't had the time to sit down with it yet.  Saffron has read quite a few of the stories, though.  My parents got me the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which we still haven't seen (gonna watch it today, when we can all sit down to see it).
I had a giant chocolate cake.  It was very sweet.

Today, the husband is going to put in a new range hood, which will be exciting, since it involves electrical work.  He also mowed more of the backyard yesterday, and it continues to look even more massive, now that 1/3 isn't covered in tall weeds.  I'm going to set Saffron to work on raking it all up; she likes doing it, and who am I to argue with that?

It's been hot here.  By hot, I mean 80 degrees, so not that hot, really.

Art Thursday -- June 3rd

"My Barn Animals"
Saffron would dearly love some farm animals 'round here.
