What-What?! Week of May 29th

This weekend has been too exciting.

That is Osric, with his arm in a splint and sling.  We took the kids over to a friend's house yesterday, and at first everyone had a great time.  But then the kids were playing, and one fell on top of Ozzy and that hurt his arm.  He wouldn't stop fussing over it, so I took him to the emergency room.  It was most likely a case of nursemaid's elbow (where one of the arm bones in the forearm become dislocated); while examining him, the doctor popped his arm bone back in.  They took x-rays of his arm and elbow anyway, just to be sure.  Those came back good, but since he was still crying about his arm, we decided it would be best to put his arm in a splint for a few days.

So that is where we are at now.  Osric is definitely feeling better today; last night he was on pain meds, but he's been up for hours today and only just asked for some, so hopefully that means it's getting better.  Of course, it's his dominant hand, so that makes life extra hard.  We had sandwiches for dinner last night, and I fed him breakfast this morning.

Other than that, not too much going on.  We're going to the library later today, and might go out hiking tomorrow.

Art Thursday -- May 26th

"A Day in the Royal Court"
A queen with her retinue; a wizard, ladies-in-waiting, a singing fairy and other musicians (playing drums and a lute), and possibly a witch (lower right).  I appreciate the composition here, and especially the sense of motion in the drummer's hands.

What-What?! Week of May 22nd

This week was pretty slow; go to work and do stuff, come home and sleep.  We had started a project at work about a month ago, but we hit the first milestone and then all the other departments decided that what they had described to us when we were gathering requirements isn't what they really wanted.  So that's on hold and we're doing bug fixes.  Which is kinda nice because I'm allowed to do development work for bug fixes, so I've been doing that.

Southwestern Style Chicken Soup

This is very much a 'do what you want' soup.  I've made it with quite a few variations, depending on what we had floating around the house at the time.  I like to serve it with tortilla chips, sour cream, shredded cheese, olives, and avocado.  If you like it spicier, then adding some diced jalapenos would do the trick.

Ingredients:
  • 2 pounds Boneless skinless chicken (breasts, thighs, whatever), cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 Onion, chopped
  • 1 Bell Pepper, chopped
  • Oil -- a few tablespoons
  • 1 can of Diced tomatoes (or Mexican-style stewed tomatoes, salsa, etc.)
  • 1 can of Chili beans (usually we get the pinto beans in chili sauce)
  • 1 can of Black beans
  • 1 can Chicken broth (or two cups homemade)
  • Salt
  • 1 Lime (if you have it; it's still good without)
Brown chicken, onion and bell pepper in oil.  Add canned goods and bring to a simmer.  Let simmer for 30 minutes.  Add juice from the lime (if available), and salt to taste.

That's it for this week..

The Weekly What-What?! Week of May 15th

So we've actually gone hiking kind of a lot.  But neither are places I'm sure we'll go back to again.

Eagle Trail

Osric will be your tour guide!

Eagle Trail is up in Arlington, but quite close to us still.  It's a pretty small trail with a playground on one side.  Unfortunately, the day we went was quite hot, and there is literally no shade anywhere near the playground or trail.

There were literally a million yellow flowers.

 Pretty flowers.
It's hard to see, but there were a lot of frogs here.
Another view of the creek.

Deering Wild Flower Acres

This place is kind of a hidden gem in Marysville.  It's a smaller park, but nicely forested with a lot of old growth.  There were a distressing amount of small flying bugs, and some places where the trail was a bit overgrown, but overall it was nice.  It was odd going into the forest here, because it's so obvious that we're not in California anymore; there was a huge amount of ferns.  Just everywhere, ferns!

It started raining after we left the house.  This is the second time in two weeks that something like this has happened to us (last time was heading for the park), and we decided just to roll with it.

Determined that these were salmonberries.  Some of the bushes were taller than the husband.
Lots and lots of moss and lichen on everything, too.
It's hard to tell from this picture, but the large leaved plant here was absolutely massive.  The leaves were easily longer than my forearm.
Shelf fungus.
We saw lots of these slugs, too.  Including in the middle of the trail.

The pond there isn't accessible via the trail, but was quite lovely to look at from afar.  There was a waterbird of some type nesting here, too.

Osric was scared the entire time we were there, and insisted on holding either my or the husband's hand.
A perfect little mushroom.

What-What?! Week of May 8th

And Osric is now four!  He is so big now, though simultaneously so little still.  When he climbs up into my lap and snuggles, it's hard to remember that he's anything other than my baby.

We had friends over and played outside.

The cake was actually a bit of a disaster -- I've made this frosting recipe multiple times before, but somehow I managed to mess it up this time.  Either way, it was still tasty; just didn't look as nice as it could've.

Next year, he'll probably get a cake -- going to be hard to get five candles on a cupcake!

Ozzy got a board game, Legos, an Angry Birds game, and a transformer.  We have yet to get out the Lego sets, but I expect that will happen this afternoon and evening.  The transformer we got him is a Decepticon (bad guy) character, so now his other transformers have someone to fight.

The Angry Birds game we got for him has been a big hit so far; it's basically just a few of the birds, a pig, and some blocks, but it's very open-ended, so there's been a lot of play.

That's it for right now.  Next week, I'll post pictures of the hike we took.

oh, and happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there <3

What-What?! Week of May 1st

Happy May Day!

This week... could have gone better.  I was rear-ended on Monday morning going to work, and while it wasn't bad or anything, and the car is still fully functional, it sucks.  I love my Subaru, and now it is crunched. :(

Not too much else going on.  I spent most of the week at work coding, which was nice.  It's nice to fix problems, rather than just finding and examining them.

Other than that, the husband did some science with Ozzy:

A simple vinegar and baking soda reaction.  Ozzy was really excited!

Food Review:  Red Rose English Breakfast

Yesterday, we went to the grocery store and needed tea.  We saw this and were surprised; Red Rose has fancy teas?

So we got some.

And it's pretty much Red Rose fancy tea.  It tastes like the regular Red Rose, just a bit different.  Not too different, but then English Breakfast is a pretty basic black tea to begin with.  Delicious with some Biscoff cookies; we'll probably be buying this one again.
