What-What?! Week of October 30th

Yesterday was Saffron's birthday!  She is now nine.  My goodness.

She has a Dungeons & Dragons themed birthday party, which was pretty fun to put together.  A lot of it came about last-minute the night before -- the two of us sitting around saying "...you know what would be cool?".

I made a picture of a beholder, to play "pin the eye on the beholder" with.  This was totally inspired by the husband's D&D birthday many years ago, with the beholder piƱata.

The husband and I also made a treasure chest, for her presents.

And we made a mimic -- a creature that looks like a real object (a crate, in this instance), but is actually a man-eating monster, waiting for someone to come by.

Playing with it in the mirror. :P

Ozzy insisted on getting a picture of him with his "claws".

All the kids had a good time playing pin the eye on the beholder:

We then defeated the mimic, by throwing "magic missiles" at it.  Saffron took out a tooth on her first throw:

The neighbor's boy pinned his tongue to the floor!

The husband made her gold coin rice crispy treats -- covered in gold sprinkles.  These were delicious.

Saffron got a ton of presents, including Legos:

Headphones:
(It feels like Saffron's breaking the 4th wall in this picture).

The husband and I got here a giant jar full of craft items, and a HUGE Playmobil zoo set:

She also got a learn to crochet set, and some books (one on Norse gods, the other one a fiction piece by Neil Gaiman).

Overall, it was a good day. :)

What-What?! Week of October 23rd

The name of the game this week is Halloween crafts. :D

Our house is now decorated for Halloween:
The husband and I made gravestones to decorate our front yard, with lovely quotes like "Oops", and "What?", and "Are you still serving breakfast?".

We also bought the kids some Halloween door hangers, which they had a good time coloring.

I only have a picture of Saffron's finished one, though?

Michael's Weekly Kid's Craft

Every week, Michael's does a kids craft event with holiday themed crafts.  We've never gone before, so it was new to us.  This week was yarn ghosts, and the kids also colored pictures of their costumes while they waited for the hot glue gun to warm up:

I love Ozzy's potato people.  So cute!

"BOOOoooooooooOOOOOOOOooooooo"

Corwin's has big BIG teeth.

Osric decided to color blood on the mouth of his ghost, to make it extra-spooky!

What-What?! Week of October 16th

Not much going on around here right now.  Last weekend, we headed to the thrift store and started gathering supplies for the kids' Halloween costumes.  Saffron is going as a dryad, so she's sewing fake leaves to a shirt, and will have a little nest with birds in it.  Corwin's going to be a bat, which I haven't quite figured out yet, and Ozzy is going to be a blue ninja (like from Lego Ninjago).  They are all ridiculously excited, of course.

The husband did pick up a model P-40 Warhawk kit to do with Corwin, which was a lot of fun:
The kit involved no glue at all, instead assembled entirely with screws.

He very much liked it, and has asked for more... which is good, because we already have another one for him.

Bonus picture of the husband and Saffron. <3

What-What?! Week of October 9th

Arlington Viking Fest

Last weekend, we headed over to the Arlington Viking Fest, now in it's second year.  It was much bigger this year, spreading out over two days, and with lots more stuff to see.

The first thing we did, though, was FIGHT!
There was a boffer fighting area set up, and the kids did a few rounds of combat.  The first round, the shields the kids picked were absolutely MASSIVE.

You can see here that the shield is just about the size of Corwin.

This kid knows how to strike a pose!

Peter did the axe throwing -- here he is learning how to throw an axe.

Winding up!

Nearly a bull's eye! He was pretty good at it, actually.

There was a very friendly blacksmith and his friend, who talked at length about the process and science of blacksmithing.

The blacksmith's friend, showing Corwin what they were making.  It's a Thor's hammer pendant with the great wyrm Jormungand wrapped around it.

Ozzy spent part of the day just being grumpy, but I finally got him to look and touch some chainmail.  We then spent the rest of the day touching all the different chainmail.

He especially liked this picture of a Viking boat, too.

Yeah, we had to do these.

The Sons of Norway was there with their model Viking ship thing.  The kids had a good time climbing aboard and being Vikings.

There were a number of other things that we didn't get pictures of -- the Empire of Medieval Pursuits was there, doing sparring demonstrations.  We saw and took turns grinding barley with a small grindstone.  There was also a local author, and we picked up one of this novels for Saffron (who impressed everyone when she informed them that she had already read ALL the Harry Potter books), and a coloring book for everyone.

It was a very good time, and I am looking forward to next year.

Art Thursday -- October 6th

"The Log Cabin"
I thought this was a very nice, detailed picture.  There's a cookpot on the right, over the fire.  The kids playing in front of the house, with the cats and their kittens watching.  There's also a mountain goat and a deer by the river.

What-What?! Week of October 2nd

Didn't do anything interesting last week, though it's now October, which means that Halloween and Saffron's birthday are coming!

But for right now, how about some pictures from last week?

"Strike a pose!"

Also "Strike a pose!"

Saffron, trying to look cool.

Ozzy was excited about this dinosaur ride on toy at the new playground there.

And a slide that was actually steep!

Corwin and Grandpa, reading on the couch.
