What-What?! Week of May 28th

The three-day weekend has totally thrown me for a loop.  I thought it was Saturday again, so I got busy coding, rather than writing a blog post. xP

Last weekend, the husband and I replaced the upstream O2 sensor in the Subaru.  After paying someone else to replace a million different other expensive parts, we decided to do this ourselves.  Unfortunately, getting to the sensor in this engine was anything but fun.  It involved being shoulder deep in the engine, in a teeny, tiny space.  And then having to move a wrench around in there.

You can almost kind of see the hole in the shade there.

Husband with arm in car.  I kept getting my hand stuck -- by the time we were done, I had collected several bruises on my arm (from the engine), and my legs (from leaning on the car).

But we did eventually get it done, and the car has seemed better since then.  We've done this thing before, though, so I'm waiting for a month without issue before deciding that the car is actually fixed.

After that, we took the kids to a  park.  Normally we'd go to Lake Goodwin park, but the parking lot was literally full, so we headed to a different park near the northwest side of the lake.  It was pretty nice, though more of a boating/picnic spot than anything.  The playground was very small, and not a lot to do.

We did see some bowl-shaped mushrooms, though.

And Ozzy harnessed the power of static electricity!

My big cutie <3

And my middle one, pointing.  Corey doesn't sit still for long, so hard to get good pictures of him.

Ready for his close-up!

This weekend, we put a new alternator in the truck, painted the door (just white, not exciting), and will go hiking still.

What-What?! Week of May 21st

Yesterday, the husband and I swapped out the backdoor of our house.  We finally had enough sun on a weekend that having a big whole open all day would be a good idea.

I tried to take some pictures of the old door, but they all just suck:

Osric and Corwin went outside and played while we worked.  We got out the lawn chairs and trucks.

Taking the door out -- notice the big holes on the left.  No wonder this doorway was drafty before!

BIIIIG HOOOOLE.  After we got the door off, you would not believe the number of bugs we found.  There was the biggest Black House Spider, a number of smaller spiders, some ants, pill bugs, and some beetles.

Hammering.  We got these nifty composite shims that were easy to break off later.  All the holes you see around the door were filled with expanding foam.

Taa-DA!  New door versus old door.

The difference in the temperature of the kitchen is already noticeable -- normally by morning, the kitchen is pretty chilly, but this morning it was actually still warm.

We still need to add trim on the inside, then paint the door and trim.  Dunno what color we're going to do -- probably just white until we make other color decisions.

This was a surprisingly easy project -- it did help that the doorway was both level and square to start out with, so not a lot of fiddling there.  Probably a not-square doorway would be harder (I'm looking at you, bedroom doors), but I'd be willing to give it a try sometime.

What-What?! Week of May 14th

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! <3

Last Sunday was Osric's birthday -- his fifth!  He's getting so big now.

This year, we decided to just do a quiet family-only thing.  The husband and I were just not feeling like hosting a party.

We did things in a different order than usual; starting with presents, so that he'd have more time to play with them before having to go to bed or whatever.
He was excited to get started. :)

He got a bunch of different things like a paint set, Legos (including Star Wars and Angry Birds, his favorites), an apple slicer, a book (Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern), and some little toys from his siblings.

He had requested the same cake as Daddy's birthday, so I made a German Chocolate Cake again, decorated with blueberries.  I made the frosting pink at Ozzy's request.

Target sells these mini-piƱatas, and the kids begged for one... so we bought one.  It was a tough little sucker, though -- took the husband beating on it to finally get it to break.

Corwin getting lost. xP

Osric was able to put together the Lego sets pretty much by himself...

Thought Corwin kept a watchful eye, too.

Osric has enjoyed using his paint set, here making a picture with a tree.

What-What?! Week of May 7th

More vacation pictures!

We went and saw the husband's brother at work...

All the kids played with swords.

And visited with the cannon.

And got some sword training.

Lookin' cool.

The husband and the brother played around too...

Ozzy the king.  Of course. :)

Today is Osric's birthday, so next week we'll have pictures from that.  I have lots to do still, including making the frosting (for the German Chocolate Cake), and maybe doing some decorating.
